Understanding tahallul, the difference between shaving and trimming, and the lifting of ihram prohibitions afterward.
Tahallul is the closing act in the sequence of Umrah worship. Linguistically, tahallul means to become permissible — the return of permissibility for matters previously forbidden during ihram. Tahallul is performed by shaving or trimming the hair of the head after the pilgrim completes tawaf and sai.
In Umrah, tahallul is a pillar. This means the Umrah is not considered complete until the pilgrim performs tahallul. It is the act that marks the orderly completion of the entire Umrah sequence — from ihram, tawaf, sai, and finally tahallul.
There are two forms of tahallul: shaving completely (halq) and trimming (taqshir). For men, shaving the entire head is preferable and carries greater merit. However, trimming the hair evenly is also permitted. Trimming should be done over the whole head, not just a small portion.
For women, tahallul is simply trimming the hair, not shaving. The method is to gather the hair and cut its ends by about a fingertip's length. Women are not prescribed to shave their hair.
After tahallul, all the ihram prohibitions that previously applied are lifted. The pilgrim may again wear ordinary clothing, use fragrance, cut nails, and do other things that were forbidden. Thus the pilgrim has fully left the state of ihram.
Many pilgrims experience the moment of tahallul as one full of emotion and gratitude. After a long journey, guarding oneself from various prohibitions, and fulfilling all the pillars, tahallul becomes a sign that the call of Umrah has been answered by Allah's leave.
In practice, shaving is often done around the Marwah area or at available barber spots. Pilgrims are advised to ensure shaving is done correctly and thoroughly so their tahallul is valid. Men who choose to shave completely should do so evenly across the whole head.
With the completion of tahallul, the Umrah is complete. Pilgrims are encouraged to increase their gratitude, maintain the good deeds habituated during ihram, and pray that their Umrah is accepted and becomes the beginning of a better change upon returning home.
